You need to take special care of your eyes as you age, since there are a number of conditions which can present.
Some of the problems that we get as we move into our Senior years (+55 years) include:
- Cataracts: this is a clouding of the normally clear lens of the eye.
- Age-Related Macular Degeneration (ARMD): This is deterioration as we age of the retina particularly the macula which is responsible for central vision.
- Glaucoma: A slow progressive Eye Disease which you may be unaware of until too late. 2% of the population has it with frequency increasing with age and 10% of people over 70years have it. If you have a family history of Glaucoma then you are ten times more likely to get the Disease.
- Diabetes Type 2: This is more common as people age and one of the possible complications is disease of the retina.
The good news is, with early diagnosis through regular eye examinations, most can be managed to avoid loss of vision.
